Dalia(Cracked wheat) Khichdi

Am back after a 2 weeks sick leave. Khichdi seems like a logical choice for someone who had not been keeping well, but this is not the reason behind this post 😛 Dalia Khichdi actually tastes good too besides being nutritious and light. And when it cuts down my effort of making a separate Dal, Curry and Chapati, what more I can ask for. Here it is for the lazy evenings:

1/2 cup Dalia
1/2 cup Moong Dal (Washed and drained)
1 cup vegetables ( Carrot, Beans, Ginger)
4 cups water

2 tbsp Clarfied butter (ghee)
1 tsp Cumin seeds (jeera)
1/4 tsp Turmeric powder (haldi)
1/2 tsp Garam Masala
a pinch of Asafoetida (heeng)
Salt to taste


  • In a pressure cooker heat Ghee. Add Asafoetida, Cumin and Turmeric powder. Add Dalia. Roast for a few minutes. Add Vegetables.
  • Add Moong Dal and water. Add Salt. When the water stars to boil, add Garam Masala.
  • Close the lid and cook on high till first whistle. Turn the heat to low and cook for 5 more minutes.
  • Switch off the heat and let steam cool down.
  • Serve hot with Papad or chips.
