Beetroot Patties | Chukunder ki Tikki

“I am alive, I am alive”. With a tinge of shame, I am singing this out to the blog world 🙂 Life has been pulling me in different direction which amounts to my vanishing acts here, every now and then. So am back here with a BIG GRIN on my face to camouflage all feelings of embarrassment and the likes :-))

I had these Beetroots lying idle in the fridge for sometime. I did not want to do the tried and tested with them. Honestly, folks at my place are not too fond of beetroot, owing to its sweetness. So I redo its getup and present it incognito (Okay, exaggeration!!!). I tried them as patties and found them to be quiet nice and versatile this way. Adding potatoes kind of neutralized its sweetness and spices jazzed up the flavour.I am adding the Indian spices here. You can add your own spices and bring up the flavour.

Serves: 3

Ingredients:

Beetroot, 3 or 4 big ones

Potatoes, 2 medium sized, boiled and peeled

1 tsp Ginger paste

1/2 to 1 tsp Green Chilli paste

Bread crumbs for the mixing and coating.

Salt to taste

Black Salt to taste

Red chilli powder as per taste (optional)

1 tsp Roasted Cumin Powder

1/2 tsp Garam Masala

Chaat Masala to sprinkle on top

Method:
  • Peel the Beetroots. Wash and keep aside till they are dry.
  • Grate them.
  • Heat oil in a wok/pan. Add the grated Beetroot. Saute.
  • Add Salt, Black Salt, Black Pepper, Cumin Powder, Red Chilli powder and mix.
  • Cover and cook for about 3-5 minutes or till Beets are soft.
  • Turn off the heat. Remove the cover and leave aside to cool.
  • Meanwhile mash or grate the boiled potatoes. Add the beetroot mixture. Add 2 tbsp of bread crumbs. Add garam masala. Mix it all together to form a dough.
  • Take small portion from this mixture. Make flat patties. Coat with breadcrumbs.
  • Heat a flat griddle non-stick or otherwise. Pour some drops of oil and shallow fry the patties on both sides.
  • Sprinkle some Chaat masala on top. Serve hot with dip/sauce.

Next time I am going to try them inside a burger and see how they fare.
